5 Signs Your Software Project Is Heading for Trouble

Most software projects don't fail overnight. The signs of a failing software project show up weeks or months before everything grinds to a halt, if you know what to look for. Here are five I see again and again when businesses bring me a build to rescue.
1. Deadlines slip with vague reasons
One missed deadline happens. A pattern of slips with fuzzy explanations ("almost done", "just one more thing") usually means the work is more out of control than anyone is admitting.
2. Communication dries up
When updates get shorter, slower, or stop, it's rarely because things are going well. Healthy projects are easy to get a straight status on.
3. You're afraid to change anything
If a small change risks breaking something unrelated, and nobody can say why, the codebase is fragile. That fragility compounds until progress stops.
4. Bugs appear that no one can explain
Recurring, mysterious bugs are a symptom of tangled code with no clear structure or tests. The team is firefighting instead of building.
5. Only one person understands the code (and they're leaving)
If the whole project lives in one developer's head with no documentation, you're one resignation away from a stalled build no one else can touch.
What to do
The earlier you act, the more you save. Get an independent audit of the code and an honest assessment before you sink more budget in. Most of these situations are recoverable; they just need someone to stabilise and finish properly. If any of these feel familiar, that's exactly what our project rescue service is for.
