How Much Does an E-commerce Website Cost in South Africa?

Dru Connold 6 min read

The e-commerce website cost in South Africa ranges from almost nothing to seven figures, which is a useless answer until you break it down. The price depends on what kind of store you need and how much of it has to be custom.

The three broad options

  • Hosted platform (Shopify, WooCommerce): the cheapest and fastest to launch. Great for a straightforward catalogue with standard checkout.
  • Customised store or integration: a hosted platform extended with custom features or connected to your other systems like stock, accounting, or enterprise resource planning (ERP).
  • Custom or multi-vendor platform: built around specific operations, multiple vendors, unusual fulfilment, or scale a standard platform can't handle.

What drives the cost

  • Catalogue size and complexity, a handful of products vs millions changes the architecture entirely.
  • Integrations, syncing stock, payments, couriers, and accounting adds real work.
  • Custom features, subscriptions, vendor management, bespoke shipping logic.
  • Design, a templated theme vs a fully bespoke storefront.

Indicative ranges

  • Simple hosted store: roughly R30,000 – R120,000 to set up well.
  • Customised / integrated store: roughly R120,000 – R400,000.
  • Custom or multi-vendor platform: R400,000 and up.

Treat these as orientation. The biggest cost lever is how much is custom versus off-the-shelf.

How to keep it sensible

Start with the simplest platform that fits, and only build custom where the standard tools can't do the job. We've done both ends: a Shopify integration syncing millions of products and a custom marketplace built from scratch. See our e-commerce service or tell us what you're selling for a real number.
