Whether you're launching a store, a subscription, or a marketplace, you'll need to accept online payments in South Africa, and there's a bit more to it than dropping in a checkout button. Here's the founder-level overview.

The moving parts

Payment gateway: the service that processes the transaction (PayFast, Netcash, Stripe, Yoco).
One-off vs recurring: single checkouts are simple; subscriptions and debit orders need real billing logic.
Settlement: how and when the money reaches your bank account, and the fees taken along the way.
Security and compliance: handling card data safely (which is why you use a gateway rather than storing cards yourself).

The main South African options

PayFast: the easy local default for cards and instant EFT.
Netcash: strong for recurring debit orders and memberships.
Stripe: powerful and developer-friendly, best for international or advanced subscriptions.
Yoco and others: worth knowing for in-person and small-business use.

What to watch for

Compare transaction fees and settlement times, check the gateway supports the payment methods your customers actually use, and plan the recurring-billing logic early if you're selling subscriptions. That's where most payment headaches come from later.

Get it built right

The gateway is the easy bit; the billing logic around it is where projects succeed or struggle. We've integrated all the major SA gateways across stores, memberships, and marketplaces. See our payment and billing integration service or ask us what fits your business.
