PayFast: the local default

PayFast is the easy starting point for most South African businesses. It supports local cards, instant electronic funds transfer (EFT), and common wallets, settles in rand, and is quick to integrate. For a typical local store or product, it is hard to go wrong with PayFast.

Netcash: strong on recurring and debit orders

If your business runs on recurring payments (memberships, subscriptions, monthly debit orders), Netcash is a serious contender. We built automated debit-order billing on Netcash for a membership organisation serving 4,800+ active members, including renewals and upgrades. For debit-order-heavy models, its strengths show.

Stripe: power and international reach

Stripe is the most developer-friendly and feature-rich of the three, with excellent subscription tooling and global card support. The catch in South Africa is around full local availability and payout nuances, so it shines most when you are selling internationally or need its advanced billing features.

The recurring-billing reality

For one-off checkouts, any of the three works. Recurring billing is where the differences bite: debit-order runs, failed-payment retries, proration, and upgrades and downgrades all need careful handling. The gateway matters, but so does the billing logic you build around it. That is where most subscription products quietly break.
